HIGHWAY NETWORK

The transportation of goods and services is vital for commercial and industrial development. Calhoun County and western Iowa offer uncongested and well-maintained federal, state, and county roads. U.S. Highway 20 crosses East to West through the center of the county. Within a twenty-five minute drive, it becomes a four-lane, 65 MPH expressway to Interstate 35 for fast, uncongested transportation across the country. State Highways 4, 7 and 175 all provide linkage to Highway 20.

It is often said that Fort Dodge, a twenty-five minute drive from Calhoun County and located on four-lane U.S. Highway 20, on a daily basis, has the most motor freight carriers and semi truck traffic per capita in the country. Those area carriers offer efficient, available services for the shipment of freight across the U.S.

RAIL

Calhoun County is also served by the Chicago Central and Pacific Railroad Company and a branch of the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. Piggyback service is available in Fort Dodge, a thirty minute drive.

AIR

The Fort Dodge Regional Airport provides commuter service to Chicago, Minneapolis, and Sioux City through Northwest Airline and cargo service through United Express. Rockwell City Municipal Airport also provides a 2,400 foot hard surface runway. Sioux city Airport and Des Moines International Airport offer most major airline service within an hour flight time or two-hour drive time.
