Iowa's work ethic and educated work force translates into productivity, low worker's compensation costs and unemployment insurance costs. Iowa's average annual workers' compensation cost of $264.94 compares to the U.S. average of $383.71. The New Employer Tax Rate for unemployment insurance in Iowa is 1 percent compared to the U.S. average of 2.7 percent.

In 1992 a Labor Survey was mailed to every household in Calhoun County. The response rate was 50 percent. The survey indicated that 913 persons were interested in new positions offered by expanding industry. additionally, 2,877 persons within a 60 mile radius were available for new positions in Calhoun County.

As a right-to-work state, Iowa has a lower rate of work stoppages than many states. In 1990 Iowa ranked twelfth in the nation in Value-added Per Worker with an average of $123,128 in comparison to the U.S. average of $109,128. Iowa ranked eleventh in Value-added Per Hour of Labor of $61.54, as compared to the national average of $54.54.

Several job-training incentive programs are available through Iowa Central Community College to custom-train new employees or retrain existing employees to meet the ever-changing technological needs of industry today.
