INDUSTRIAL Calhoun County, site of some of the best soil on earth, has traditionally had a agricultural-based economy. Until recently, minimal effort has been made to attract industry to the area. However, Calhoun County is home to an interesting variety of ``home grown" stable industries such as: Dobson Pipe Organ Company: One of the nations major manufacturers of pipe organs. Brand FX: A major manufacturer of truck utility bodies. Bowie Manufacturing, Inc.: A major manufacturer of fiberglass veterinarian truck bodies. Manson Industries, Inc: An international exporter of microwave popcorn. Air Electric Machine Co.: A manufacturer of lawn ornaments such as windmills and lighthouses. Pomeroy Manufacturing, Inc.: A long time manufacturer of slats, stalls, pens and gates for livestock. LOCAL INCENTIVES These three organizations use their funds to leverage state and federal assistance from programs such as the Community Economic Betterment Account, Economic Development Set-Aside, and the various Small Business Administration programs. The Calhoun county Rural Electric Cooperative and the Corn Belt Power Cooperative also want to make Calhoun County ``Your Home in the Heartland". These organizations also have available low-interest loans and rate packages for new and expanding industry. Tax abatements for industrial and commercial expansion are available. Manson also has a five-year tax abatement for the construction of new single-family housing. Manson Industrial Development Corporation owns an industrial park with approximately 29 acres remaining for further development. STATE INCENTIVES Low-interest, no interest or forgivable loans throughout the Community Economic Betterment Account. (CEBA) Iowa is a right-to-work state. No sales tax and use tax on industrial machinery, equipment and computers. No personal property tax. New jobs tax credit when work force is increased by 10 percent. Research and development tax credit of 6.5 percent. No tax on pollution control equipment. Ten year property tax exemption in urban revitalization areas. Local option five-year partial exemption for improvements to real property. Single-factor, non-unitary income tax. Federal tax deductibility of 50 percent. Seed capital financing. Property tax exemption of 70 percent for machinery, equipment and computers. Highway and access road funding for highway improvements through RISE. Job training assistance through area community colleges. These state and local incentives mean Calhoun County is ``open for business". |
